One big change I have made in the past few years has been finding healthier options for the products I use in my day to day life. It started with food. I began choosing organic products and looking more closely at where they were sourced. I cut out processed foods and added in more whole foods. I realized if I wanted to feel good I needed to start fueling my body with quality foods and forget the crap that made me feel like crap. You are what you eat, right?
I also started choosing more natural cleaning products. There are so many chemicals and toxins in cleaning products that I didn't want to surround myself in anymore. I figured if I am fueling my body with more natural ingredients I should do the same for my home. You can check out one of my favorite brands here https://www.lively-living.com/my-favorite-things.
The next step I took was to start looking at my cosmetics and body care products. When I started to think about it, what I was putting on my body was as important as what I was putting in my body. Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs everything we put on it. I discovered the EWG Skin Deep website and began looking up how my current beauty products were rated. The results were very shocking.
Here are the categories a product is rated in on the website:
- Overall hazard
- Developmental and reproductive toxicity
- Allergies and immunotoxicity
- Use Restrictions
- Other HIGH concerns
I was shocked to see these scary words associated with the products I was using everyday on my body. Cancer? Reproductive toxicity? Why are these products being sold in the first place??
I decided to start making some changes but I soon realized that this swap was a bit more challenging than I expected. The issue was not the availability of natural products, but rather how well they worked. There are a ton of natural beauty products available but I found that I would be sacrificing the performance I was used to for safety. This led to me spending money on natural products, discovering they did not live up to the performance of my old products, and reverting to the products I was using before. I don't know about you, but when I spend $20 on a new mascara and hate it, I am pretty disappointed. It seemed that there had to be a better option than this, but I hadn't found it.
I saw a friend post about a new beauty line called Beautycounter and didn't think much about it because my news feed was constantly filled with friends selling nail stickers, leggings, lipgloss, etc... you know what I'm talking about. I decided to look this brand up because this particular friend is a nutritionist and was always promoting her favorite products to live a healthier life. When I visited the website I was immediately intrigued. What they were offering was exactly what I had been looking for. Products that were not either safe or effective, this company was offering the best of both worlds.
I started trying their cosmetics as well as skin care products and seriously LOVED them. They were great products and I felt so much better about using them. I fell in love with this company and their products. Their mission is to get safer products in everyone's hands and spread the word about the toxic products so many of us have been using. Not only are they making these great products but they are also working to make changes by requesting congress to change legislation and update the laws for the cosmetic industry.
After learning all about the company and stocking my drawers full of their products, I decided I wanted to be a part of this movement. I am now a Consultant for Beautycounter and very proud to be a part of this company. Another plus with Beautycounter is that many of their products are EWG verified meaning they:

• Fully disclose all ingredients
• Follow good manufacturing practices
